Carbasalate Calcium Soluble Powder: A Novel Antipyretic, Analgesic, and Anti-inflammatory Agent for Swine

Introduction

Carbasalate calcium soluble powder is a calcium salt synthesized from aspirin and urea, serving as a new-generation antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory drug approved in China for oral use in livestock. It is characterized by:

  • Rapid absorption

  • Quick onset

  • High bioavailability

  • Safety with no residues

Clinically, it is indicated for porcine febrile diseases, pain relief, and symptomatic management of infections.

I. Mechanism of Action

  1. Antipyretic Effect:

    • Acts on the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center, inducing peripheral vasodilation and increased skin blood flow to enhance heat dissipation.

    • Does not reduce normal body temperature.

  2. Anti-inflammatory Effect:

    • Suppresses redness, swelling, and pain by inhibiting antigen-antibody complex reactions and reducing inflammatory exudation.

  3. Analgesic Effect:

    • Peripheral analgesia effective against chronic dull pain (e.g., neuralgia, arthralgia, myalgia).

II. Key Applications in Swine Production

  1. Viral Diseases (e.g., Influenza, PRRS):

    • Water-soluble advantage: Ideal for febrile pigs with reduced feed intake (e.g., add 1 kg/ton water).

    • Combines with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin) to prevent secondary infections.

  2. Hoof/Limb Disorders (e.g., FMD, Arthritis):

    • Reduces inflammation and pain without injection risks (e.g., myocarditis in FMD).

  3. Low-Grade Fevers (e.g., Mycotoxins, Respiratory Issues):

    • Feed additive (50% carbasalate calcium at 250–500 g/ton feed) for mild cases.

  4. Synergistic Protocols:

    • Example:

      • Water: 50% carbasalate calcium (500 g/ton) + florfenicol (500 g/ton) + Banlangen granules (1 kg/ton).

      • Feed: 50% carbasalate calcium (1 kg/ton) + enrofloxacin (1 kg/ton) + Yinqiao VC granules (1 kg/ton).

III. Dosage Guidelines

  • Standard: 250–500 g of 50% carbasalate calcium/ton water.

  • Acute Phase500 g/ton (first 2 days) → 250 g/ton (next 3 days).

IV. Compatibility & Contraindications

  1. Avoid:

    • Corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone) → Increased gastric ulcer risk.

    • Alkaline drugs → Reduced efficacy (salicylic acid metabolite is pH-sensitive).

  2. Compatible With:

    • Antibiotics: Penicillins, cephalosporins, gentamicin.

    • Antivirals: Isatis root, astragalus polysaccharides, ribavirin.

V. Advantages Over Other Antipyretics

Feature Carbasalate Calcium Aspirin Paracetamol Metamizole
Anti-inflammatory Yes No No No
Water Solubility High Low Slight High
Side Effects None GI ulcers Mild Immunosuppression

VI. Therapeutic Protocols for Common Swine Diseases

  1. Swine Influenza:

    • Water: 50% carbasalate calcium (1 kg/ton) + florfenicol (500 g/ton) + Banlangen granules (1 kg/ton).

    • Feed: 50% carbasalate calcium (1 kg/ton) + enrofloxacin (1 kg/ton) + Yinqiao VC (1 kg/ton).

  2. Joint Swelling (e.g., Strep./Glaesserella):

    • Feed: 50% carbasalate calcium (1 kg/ton) + enrofloxacin (1 kg/ton) + amoxicillin (1 kg/ton).

  3. Endotoxemia (Low-Grade Fever):

    • Water: 50% carbasalate calcium (500 g/ton) + vitamin C (1 kg/ton).

  4. Postpartum Metritis/Mastitis:

    • Feed: 50% carbasalate calcium (1 kg/ton) + amoxicillin (1 kg/ton) + Yimu Shenghua San (1 kg/ton).

Conclusion

Carbasalate calcium’s safety, efficacy, and versatility make it indispensable for modern swine production, particularly in febrile, inflammatory, and painful conditions. Rational use ensures compliance with residue regulations and supports sustainable farming.
