1.What is Nystatin?

Nystatin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic suitable for the livestock and poultry breeding industry. It is a natural product fermented by Streptomyces bacteria, possessing excellent antibacterial activity and the ability to inhibit biofilm formation.

2.How it Works?

Nystatin is a polyene antibiotic whose mechanism of action primarily involves inhibiting fungal growth by disrupting the integrity of the fungal cell membrane. The specific mechanisms are as follows:

Antifungal Mechanism
Nystatin binds to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, forming polyene complexes that increase membrane permeability. This leads to the loss of potassium ions and water, ultimately causing fungal cell lysis and death. This mechanism shows significant inhibitory effects against common pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans.

Antifungal Spectrum
It primarily targets digestive tract fungal infections (e.g., candidiasis) and cutaneous fungal infections (e.g., favus in poultry). When applied topically, nystatin can inhibit fungal spore germination and block the fungal reproductive cycle.

3.Benefits and Uses:

Nystatin, a polyene antibiotic produced by Streptomyces noursei, has multiple therapeutic functions. It can effectively inhibit or kill fungi such as Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides spp., and Microsporum spp. Additionally, nystatin is used to treat intestinal fungal infections, particularly for preventing or treating fungal infections caused by long-term use of tetracycline antibiotics. Clinically, it is also employed to treat gastrointestinal candidiasis in dogs and cats. For cutaneous fungal infections, topical application is equally effective. Furthermore, it has shown significant efficacy in treating mycotic proventriculitis and gizzard infections in poultry.
