1.What is Azaperone?

Azaperone is a pyridinylpiperazine and butyrophenone-type antipsychotic agent with sedative and antiemetic effects, primarily used in veterinary medicine as a tranquilizer. It acts as an antagonist at dopamine receptors, capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and binding to both D₁ and D₂ receptors.

2.How it Works?

Azaperone is a butyrophenone tranquilizer. With low toxicity and short duration of action, it is particularly suitable for hoofed animals. It can be used for sedation, tranquilization (to eliminate aggression) and chemical restraint in pigs, with effects lasting 2-3 hours. It also serves as an excellent tranquilizer for horses, taking effect within 10 minutes, peaking between 10-70 minutes, and wearing off after 4 hours.

3.Benefits and Uses:

The most common use of azaperone is in relatively small doses as a "tranquilizer" for farmed pigs (to reduce aggression), either to prevent fighting or to encourage sows to accept piglets. Higher doses are combined with other drugs such as xylazine, tiletamine, and zolazepam for anesthetic purposes. Azaperone is also used in combination with potent anesthetics (like etorphine or carfentanil) to sedate large animals such as elephants. Its use should be avoided in horses due to the potential for adverse reactions.
